Building safe homes for tribal communities in Karjat, Mumbai

My Story

In November 2018, I will join a team of volunteers travelling to India to build safe homes for tribal communities in the Karjat region, a few hours outside Mumbai.   Unsafe and inadequate housing is a major problem faced by the tribal people of Karjat. Houses with thatched roofing, weak foundations and flooring with mud and cow dung are unsafe and require frequent repairs. We will build real homes that have the power to improve health and education, creating strong communities and safety for vulnerable people, allowing them to thrive and not just survive

Access to safe, decent housing is the foundation to achieving essential human rights, such as education, security, property rights, food and privacy. 1.6 billion people live without adequate shelter, in unsafe slums. These people live in constant fear of forced eviction and natural disasters

Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 1.3 million homes and served over 13 million people - working in over 70 countries. As a charity focused on long-term poverty alleviation through affordable social housing, their mission is to build a safe environment where families and communities can thrive
