My Story

In 2014 I had the privilege to go to Brazil and build a rain water catchment system with our Duke Engineers Without Borders team. I spent my whole summer working in a favela in João Pessoa building a system the provides rain water to the favela's community center. The community center is crucial to the local as it promotes education and healthy habits to the kids in the community. It aspires to take care of the kids and give them a reason to dream of a better life. During that summer, I fell in love with the work and people and have since wished to go back and keep helping.

It is now 2019 and I have decided to go back to Brazil to do the same thing once more for the beautiful people of Brazil. This time I will be going back in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Volunteering in this program is about helping families who are in extreme poverty in the semiarid region of Brazil to have restricted access to clean and usable water at home.

In Caruaru, family members must walk long distances to collect water for their homes. This water is often unclean due to its exposure to animals, laundry, and other kinds of waste. This contamination leads to the transmission of diseases.

Between October 12th and 20th, our team will build 16,000 litre water tanks, also called cisterns, along with the mechanism to collect rain water. We will be doing the follwing:

Cement preparation
Cement Plates Production and assembling
Tying wires around the plates
Plastering and Painting Cistern´s walls
Water Pump Production and Installation

All the fees collected will go towards the materials needed for this project and transportation. Housing, meals, and other costs will be covered by Habitat for Humanity
