My Story

Why vacation in Salima, Malawi you ask?

On June 20, I'm joining Neale Kemp's Habitat for Humanity Global Village Build in Salima, Malawi. Imagine being a child and losing both your parents. There are no adults to step in and take care of you and your siblings. You have no home and IF you can find work, the wage is roughly $1 per day. That's what many kids in Salima are facing. We can't solve all of the problems but we can subsidize and build homes to shelter them from the torrential downpours and insects that further impact their health.

The number of orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi increased from 937,000 in 2001 to 1,400,000 in 2010, representing an increase of 66 percent in less than a decade. Malawi has a high rural to urban migration – 5.3% per annum, according to UN-Habitat. We will be providing new homes that are fully subsidized for orphans who are now the heads of households. The houses are two, three or four-roomed according to the family size. Under Neale's leadership, we usually complete one or two extra houses than Habitat plans for us.

There is no doubt that our work in Malawi will change some lives. My own included.

Know that any funds you donate will go directly to the build and not to my airfare nor my expenses.  Anything over our goal will go to Habitat for Humanity's efforts in bringing decent and affordable housing to those in need. Note that this is listed in British pounds rather than US dollars when making a donation.
