My Story

Most of us live in nice houses where we are safe and dry with running water an electricity. Sadly that isn’t the same for everyone! I have been inspired for many years by a fellow guide leader friend who volunteers to build houses with Habitat for Humanity and has made such a different to the lives of many families by helping to build a safe new home in their community. So now I am taking the plunge and have joined up.

For two weeks this summer I will be going to South Africa with my hard hat and steel toe capped boots to help build a house. I will do whatever is needed mixing cement or helping my team-mates with their sore shoulders (have to use my massage skills somewhere). I think my international Guide camp experience will also stand me in good stead for any eventuality.

The charity is committed to building 1000 houses in this area of Kwazulu Natal (107 already completed) so that is no easy task. However here is where I need your help. I need to fundraise £1550 towards the experience which pays for the time on the build, some of the materials, food, accommodation etc. I think this is about half of what it will cost to go (as I will also be paying roughly the same again myself for flights, registration, visas etc).

I am planning a few fundraising activities, but here is the easiest one of all, a straightforward donation. It will make such a difference if you can dig deep and support this house build, and I will be super grateful!
