My Story
On February 1st 2019, myself and 9 of my collegues from CALA Homes will be departing on a trip to Cambodia on a Habitat for Humanity build programme to help improve the lives of families who have very little by helping to build a house for one of these families to live in.
After decades of war under the Khmer rouge, Urban poverty in Cambodia worsened and people started settling in every conceivable empty space, from courtyards to rooftops, by the side of railway tracks and near riverbanks and swamps. The Battambang project is unique in making centrally located, urban land available for housing the poor.
The work involves building homes made from compressed earth blocks, and converting state-owned land in urban areas in Battambang into privately owned plots. Tasks will include digging foundations, drainage, barrowing, bricklaying, brick making and any work we are asked to do to progress the build, we will be working in 30 degree temperatures and high humidity.
This is your unique opportunity to help families build their homes by raising vital funds and directly contributing to the work of Habitat for Humanity on the ground. Our days on the construction site, building side by side with the community, will make a real difference for families who need a safe place to call home.
I am proud to have been chosen to represent CALA and feel very privilaged to be able to take part and improve the lives of even one family, now I am going to ask for your help, I would like to raise as much money as I can to help Habitat for Humanity continue their work long after we have all come home.
Any donation you can give would be very much appreciated, I have no doubt that this will be a very big challenge in the conditions that we will all be working and would like to thank you in advance for anything that you can give to this great charity.
