My Story

I am excited to be joining the Lloyd’s Market Build trip to Malawi for one week in October 2020. I will be travelling with Habitat for Humanity as part of a team of volunteers to help build a new home for a family in Mulanje.

Habitat for Humanity has a mission to create safe environments where families and communities can thrive, by helping build secure homes for the most vulnerable. This programme started in 2009 and has already constructed 200 houses for families in six communities.

Mulanje is famous for its traditional dances, and Mulanje Mountain, but has an extremely high housing need. Many children living there have been orphaned as a result of HIV and AIDS, which has resulted in a large number of households being led by children who cannot afford to look after the home. Housing poverty in Mulanje means that many of the people in the community live on less than $1 a day.

During my week in Mulanje, I will be working on site mixing mortar, carrying and laying bricks, plastering walls, and more, working alongside local tradesmen, local volunteers and the homeowners themselves. The aim is to complete a house and hand this over to a family at the end of the week so that they have a proper shelter with a lockable front door – somewhere to call home!

Whilst I have paid the deposit and will be funding the flights myself, I need to raise a minimum of £2100, so would love you to help me. Any donation will be much appreciated and is going towards a great cause, plus Lloyd’s will match fund the first £500 I raise.

Many thanks

Susy
